CTLGH and ILRI Jointly Honoured by UNEP for Pioneering Climate-Smart Livestock Research
Nairobi, Kenya – Earlier in 2023, ahead of this week’s much-anticipated Africa Climate Summit, high-level CEOs met for the round table on “Private Sector Engagement and Priorities for Business Climate Action for Resilience and Green Growth”. The meeting, convened by the United Nations Environmental Programme UNEP, brought together influential figures from the private sector to discuss engagement and priorities for climate action, resilience, and green growth. The round table aimed to foster collaboration with and within the private sector for environmental sustainability, acknowledging the pivotal role that organizations, such as CTLGH, play in addressing global climate challenges.
One of the highlights of the event was an award ceremony that celebrated organizations and entities demonstrating significant efforts and innovative approaches towards environmental sustainability. CTLGH and ILRI jointly received the prestigious award in the “Research” category for their pioneering efforts in sustainable livestock and climate-smart research that are crucial for addressing climate change challenges in Africa.
Director General at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Consultive Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Senior Director of Livestock-Based Systems, and previous Director at CTLGH, Professor Appolinaire Djikeng, attended the meeting, upon invitation, to accept the award. Representing both organisations, Appolinaire expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire CTLGH and ILRI family. It’s an acknowledgement of the relevance of our research for smallholder farmers, the environment, and our planet”.
UNEP’s decision to honour CTLGH and ILRI reflects their commitment to promoting sustainable practices and encouraging innovative solutions to combat climate change. Professor Djikeng took the opportunity to extend congratulations to key collaborators and partners who have played a crucial role in our success. “I want to use this moment to congratulate the CTLGH Nairobi node, ILRI, the University of Edinburgh, The Roslin Institute, and SRUC for their unwavering support and dedication”.
